Fiji Trip Report May 2007 |
|
|
|
Bula, and vinaka, Fiji! Another
successful trip is in the
books. The latest Fiji adventure delivered
unprecedented shark interaction and unlimited good
times.
The moment we arrived we were welcomed by the
kind and gracious Fijian staff of the Beqa Lagoon
Resort. We were briefed on logistical matters and
directed to our comfortable bures. We had been
informed that there would be a special Firewalking
ceremony that evening because a film crew from
Australia was there to capture activities at the resort
for a feature on an upcoming episode. It was an
extraordinary and impressive ceremony.
The next day we suited up for a reef dive. The Fijian
reefs are world-renowned for their exquisite soft coral.
While scenic and the perfect warm-up dive, we were
all itching to see some big critters. The following day,
we met up with Rusi and Manassa, the talented shark
feeders from Beqa Adventure Divers (the "BAD boys"),
at the Shark Reef Marine Reserve. On the first dive,
we were immediately met by several bull sharks, and
then Princess, a tiger shark, blessed us with her
presence. This 12-foot beauty is known to be feisty
(often described as a "wrecking ball"), but she was
fairly well-behaved with us. A few divers received
some extra love from her, which both delighted and
slightly intimidated them. She is, indeed, wondrous.
We were honored that she spent the first two shark
dives with us.
This trip also marked the glorious return of Scarface
and we were lucky enough to have two days with her.
She hadn't been seen since December 2006 when
she went on "maternity leave." Where Princess is the
tomboy tiger, Scarface is the lady. Her sheer size
and grace draw all eyes to her whenever she is on the
scene. What a
vision! She has a completely different
aura that can be felt from miles away as we witnessed
on the last shark dive. The first part of the dive was
eerily quiet, but we all sensed something big was on
the way. One lowly nurse shark, accompanied by his
damsel, wrasse and trevally friends hung with us.
After no bull or tiger appearances, we ascended to the
shallow reef to watch the speedy, sleek white and
blacktips cruise around. Slightly disappointed, but
ever hopeful we continued on to the boat. As we
climbed onboard we heard the news that Scarface a
16 foot Tiger shark
had just been sighted. I cannot tell you how agonizing
that surface interval was. We eagerly counted down
the brutally long 60 minutes until we could join her.
Finally we got back in the water. As we situated
ourselves along the wall, Scarface materialized from
the depths. And, boy did she and
Rusi
serve up a
grand finale. For the first time in Rusi's remarkable
career he fed Scarface with his mouth 4 times! It
was incredible for us to watch, and thrilling for him to
experience. We couldn't have scripted a better ending.
From the exceptional hospitality of the Fijian people to
the exhilarating encounters with the creatures we so
love, Fiji is a gift to shark divers. As usual it was a real
joy to be surrounded by others who share the shark
passion. Thank you Shark Diving
International for
producing a safe and memorable trip. I
can't wait for
the next one! Happy sharking!
