When is the best time to go? This is a tricky question because we dive two distinct geographical areas. These are the Sea of Cortez and
the Socorro Islands. The best season in each area opposite from one another. The Sea of Cortez is best July through December and the
Socorro Islands are best November through May. For this reason we dive the Sea of Cortez July through October and dive Socorro Islands
November through May. Although both areas good in Nov/Dec we dive Socorro Islands since they are more remote and less dived. This is a
very unique situation where our vessel can reach two different areas at their best seasons from only one port. For specific water conditions
and marine life encounters go to the SOLMAR V home page and see Socorro Seasons & Sea of Cortez.
What airlines fly there and to what airport? The international airport for our home port in Cabo San Lucas is San Jose Del Cabo Airport
(airline code SJD). This is the same airport used by visitors to Los Cabos in general. It is located about a 45 minute taxi ride from
Cabo San Lucas. There are many airlines that fly directly into this airport. Alaska Airlines from Los Angeles, San Diego and other west coast
cities; Aero Mexico from San Diego; Mexicana & Aero California from Los Angeles; America West from Phoenix; American Airlines from Chicago &
Dallas; Continental from Houston & Newark; and Delta from Atlanta. These are only the direct flights from gateway cities so you can start from
anywhere and get to us quite easily through these gateway cities.
What travel documents do I need for immigration? As a US Citizen you only need proof of citizenship. You will be asked to fill out a
tourist card on the plane and present this to the immigration officials in Mexico. A Visa is not required for US Citizens. For other
nationalities you should ask your airline or call a Mexican Consulate in your area. With so much happening recently these regulations
can change and the airlines are usually the first to know.
Where do I go when I arrive? At the time of making a reservation we will send you a pre-trip information sheet. If you do not receive it
please ask for it. This will go over arrival procedures but it is quite easy. Once you check though immigration and collect your bags from
the luggage carousel you will proceed through customs. After customs look for the "Authorized Taxi" booth where you can purchase shuttle
tickets to the Hotel Solmar Suites. It is about a 45 minute ride into town. At the hotel Solmar Suites just check in at the front desk and
they will direct you to the waiting area for SOLMAR V clients. An Instructor from the boat arrives about 1 p.m. to start check in procedures
and the whole group is picked up about 2:30 p.m. and taken to the boat. Departure time is between 3 - 4 p.m.
Should I arrive one day prior? The boat leaves between 3 - 4 p.m. and as long as you can land by 1p.m. the day of departure you should
have plenty of time to get to the boat. Many clients enjoy the fact that they can board a plane in Los Angeles today and be diving with
giant mantas tomorrow! Clients traveling from farther away using multiple flights with one or more connections might consider arriving a
day earlier to make sure their luggage makes it all the way through. Although this has never been a big problem, we do not accept responsibility
for missing the boat due to airline delays.
What clothes should I bring? On either our Socorro Islands or Sea of Cortez trips clothing should be kept to a minimum. You will be in your
swimsuit most of the trip and shorts and t-shirts are the common dress. Daytime temps range in the 80's and 90's during the day to mid 70's
in the evenings. A sweatshirt, windbreaker or light sweater is advised for those evenings when things cool off a bit more than normal.
What about scuba equipment? The price includes tanks(aluminun 80's) weights and a weight belt. Additional equipment can be rented for the week
BEFORE you leave the dock. It is wise to advise us when making a reservation that you will need to rent equipment. Equipment is rented from
Amigos Del Mar dive store and runs $55/trip/item. These rates may change depending on the trip so please reconfirm when making reservations.
We also have plenty of extra equipment on board in case your equipment should fail. This equipment is rented on a daily basis when needed.
Underwater photography or video equipment is not available at this time and you should be completely self-contained when it comes to this
equipment. Rule of thumb when packing is to pack light but keep in mind that "it is better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it."
What kind of wetsuit will I need? We recommend a two piece 3mm or a onepiece 5 mm for most of our trips. The water at Socorro ranges from 78°-80°
F in Nov to 70°-72° F in Feb/Mar and then back up to 78 - 80 in early April and May. Sea of Cortez is warmer with 77°-80° F water
in July and early August and then 80-83 F in late August/Sept and October. It is always better to layer your wetsuits so that you can use part or
all to adjust for water temps. We have also been recommending a thin 2-3mm tropical hood at Socorro in Feb/Mar. Should you run into unexpectedly
cold water or thermocline, this hood works wonders in containing body heat. They are also inexpensive and easy to pack.
Do you have nitros or E-6 processing? At this time we do not have Nitrox or E-6 so please plan accordingly.
If I come in early or stay later what about hotels? Since we are not a travel agency, by law we can not book general hotel rooms. Since we
represent Hotel Solmar Suites we can only book rooms at the Solmar Suites in Cabo. The Solmar is a fine, deluxe oceanfront property. For details
and pricing visit the Solmar Suites page. We realize that some are not looking for a fancy property and just want a moderate place to stay. We
recommend visiting a general Cabo site like visitcabo.com which shows all the properties in our area. Be aware that Los Cabos refers to Cabo San
Lucas and San Jose Del Cabo. You should find a hotel in the town of Cabo San Lucas if you wish to be close to the boat.
